After 25 years of married life, Julien and Clemence Bouin have ended up hating each other. Living in a dilapidated house soon to be demolished, their lives are filled with bitterness and regret for the happy past both have lost. When Julien adopts a stray cat and smothers it with affection, Clemence's suppressed resentment turns to hatred.

This poignant film portrays the remnants of a long dead relationship visibly disintegrating alongside the debris of a faded, long past society. One of the most brutal films about married life ever made in France, this is a deeply disturbing film, laden with a pall of pessimism which is only briefly lifted in the final moments of the film.

Depressing but mesmerizing, this movie is like a horrible traffic accident - you know it's going to be gruesome, but you can't look away because you MUST know what happened to these people. The acting - in fact the entire film - is typically French, grittily realistic, yet artistically satisfying. No pie-in-the-sky happy ending. People are cruel sons of guns who can't even love without corruption. Deal with it. Simone Signoret's wild eyes as she cuts up her husband's prized newspapers ("Look what you have done, Kitty!") will stick with you for years afterward. I know. I saw it in the theater when it came out. There was a tag line for this film, one of the best I've heard, since it summarizes the plot exactly: "A love-hate relationship so strong it destroyed everything - the man, the woman - even the cat." Basada en una novela de Simenon, es la historia de un viejo matrimonio separado por el tedio y la incomunicación. Ella ha sido acróbata de un circo, él, tipógrafo. El marido enfoca todo su afecto en un gato encontrado en la calle. El mismo gato es recipiente, por ello, del odio de la esposa. Una interesante descripción de la muerte del amor.

Dans un petit pavillon d'une banlieue populaire, Julien et Clémence, un vieux couple, se déchire après s'être longtemps aimé. Un jour, Julien ramène un chat perdu auquel il voue bientôt une profonde affection. Après trente cinq ans de mariage, le couple se déteste ou plus justement, ne s'aime plus. Et tout cela pourquoi? A cause d'un chat?

Ici, Gabin trouve l'un de ses derniers grands rôles et apporte à son personnage un poids incommensurable. En lui faisant partager l'affiche avec Simone Signoret, Pierre Granier-Deferre nous sert un monument du cinéma français. Les deux monstres sacrés sont au sommet de leur art et promènent leur charisme de plans en plans nous entraînant à chaque instant dans une vie de couple où il ne fait plus bon vivre.
