The is a horror movie, in the wake of The Ring (Ringu). The main character is a journalist (as in Ringu) who has written a series of articles about sex offenders which has brought down on her some dangerous people who have been exposed in the scandal. When she changes her cellphone number to escape her tormentors she ends up with a number with special significance - 6644. From this point on she ends up getting very weird phone calls and after each one, she experiences increasingly violent visions.

The movie is very derivative, this is true. But which horror movie isn't? Dismissing a horror-flick and saying "This movie from 1954 has the same thing" is stupid. You can always find some older work which is similar or even the same. It's no mean feat. What's important in a horror movie is one thing: is it scary? My answer is: it is.

I was very skeptical at first and found the opening scene to be almost dull. But the enterprise takes off, most of all with the incredible performance of the little girl who can turn from sweet little angel to devlish banshee on a dime. If for no other reason, go see it and you'll have to agree that she is completely believable as possessed.

I also believe that the story is richer if less original than the Ring. It is also a very well made without much special effects or gore. It relies heavily on acting and suspense and does this well.

Same-time Risk doesn't use the classic six-sided dice; instead, it uses a completely new die rule - the attacker and defender each gets one 12-sided die that has a certain amount of number values on it, depending on the size of the army. There are five ranks of the 12-sided dice, called "battle dice", from white to black. The white die rolls an average of 2.6, while the black die rolls an average of 4.5, making it easier for larger armies to destroy smaller ones. Not only does the color of the battle dice determine how strong your roll will probably be, but it also determines how many armies you'll lose upon the outcome of the roll. While this new system is certainly interesting, it's somewhat one-sided, and it completely eliminates the infamous "Rambo" scenario in which your single defending army successfully repels an attack, even though it's hopelessly outnumbered. The advantage is now definitely with the attacker, as the defender no longer wins a tie in same-time Risk. To make up for this, same-time Risk sports a rule that limits exactly how many armies you can use to fortify certain territories. Unfortunately, this rule is frustrating, as you'll often find yourself with more reinforcements than you can spend on your border territories, making you waste those armies on a country that's not at immediate risk. With all these variables, same-time Risk is a quicker, more ruthless game than the classic version, and it couldn't possibly exist without the assistance of a computer to keep track of all the details. Each of the game's different play modes contains a good amount of options that can dramatically change the play style. You can decide what objective wins the game - from world domination to individual missions. There's also a brand-new winning objective that is reminiscent of the short-lived Castle Risk game: Capital Risk has you designate one of your countries as your capital. To win the game, you must occupy your capital as well as those of at least two other players. There are also three different ways to determine starting positions: You can either go by the book and take turns selecting countries, or you can use "house rules" and deal all the territory cards out at the beginning of the game, randomly assigning countries to players. The third way is a completely new and somewhat painstaking method of distributing the territories. Each player starts the game with a certain number of influence points, which you use to bid on each territory as it's auctioned off. When a final bid is placed, the player spends the points and gains the territory.

A day in the life of a barbershop on the south side of Chicago. Calvin, who inherited the struggling business from his deceased father, views the shop as nothing but a burden and waste of his time. After selling the shop to a local loan shark, Calvin slowly begins to see his father's vision and legacy and struggles with the notion that he just sold it out. The barbershop is filled with characters who share their stories, jokes, trials and tribulations. In the shop we find Eddie, an old barber with strong opinions and no customers. Jimmy is a highly educated barber with a superiority complex who can't stand Isaac, the new, white barber who just wants a shot at cutting some hair. Ricky is an ex-con with two strikes against him and is desperately trying to stay straight. Terri is a hard-edged woman who can't seem to leave her two-timing boyfriend. And lastly there's Dinka, a fellow barber who is madly in love with Terri but doesn't get the time of day.

Lucrecia Martel's The Holy Girl offers a rare combination of boldly ambitious themes, encompassing the power of nascent sexuality and the nature of sin, with a commendable moral complexity and depth of characterization. With remarkable subtlety and grace, Martel delineates a minor tragedy brought about by compulsive behavior and the uncontrolled passions of an adolescent girl channeled into well-intended destruction.



Throughout the film, Martel shows impressive command of potentially incendiary material, avoiding any melodrama that doesn't take in her teenage protagonist's head. Set at a doctors' conference at a rundown hotel, the film encompasses multitudinous subplots filled with gossip, corruption, and petty betrayal, but Martel never once lets her story stray from a convincing evocation of the real world.



Everyone has their own agenda, and no one anticipates its ultimate effect on those around them. Dr. Jano (Carlos Belloso) is hardly an ogre, but he lets himself give in to his baser instincts, using the anonymity of the crowd as cover. Hoping to cop a quick feel and slip away, he accidentally engages the full attention of Amalia (the unsettlingly voluptuous young Maria Alché), who only wants to find and fulfill God's plan for her. Confident enough to end her film on the brink of a precipice, Martel is anything but moralist. Raiding the Disney archives, Walt Disney Fables Volume 2 is a collection of animated fairy tales from as early as the mid-1930s. Of the two volumes, this is perhaps better suited to younger children, featuring as it does a succession of short, easy-to-follow stories told through bright, colourful characters and songs. It may not feature any of Disney's more recognisable creations, but the chosen fables are imbued with strong enough stories to hold the attention.

The animation, while state-of-the-art in its day, comes over now as more than a little awkward and crude--especially in comparison to the studio's classic output of the 1960s. While not really an example of Disney at its best, this does give a good indication of the company's roots and the start of a process that would lead to countless magical moments along the way.

On the DVD: Walt Disney Fables Volume 2 presents a snapshot of early animation and as such is not really amenable to technical enhancement, leaving an overall effect that offers no substantial improvement on the VHS format. The chapter selection, however, will be a boon for anyone who has sat through increasingly worn video tapes over the years. There is a reasonably appealing interactive game based on Disney's films over the years, yet with no other extras at all this is a long way short of the standard of presentation that the studio itself has set.

A collection of six short animated versions of classic children's tales, all told in the distinctive Disney style. Includes the stories of "The Ugly Duckling," "Little Hiawatha," "A Farmyard Symphony," "Wynken, Blynken And Nod," "Merbabies" and "The Old Mill."
